A Thousand Words

They say 'a picture's worth a thousand words'
So I saved every picture I had of you
But I didn't dare to look at them again
Because what if what they said wasn't true?

What if those pictures stared back at me?
Empty and blank and forlorn
Only to remind me that the good times we had
Were frozen in pictures that are almost torn.

What if those pictures reminded me
Of the fact that you were no longer here?
What if those pictures reinstated in me
That dangerous spark of fear-

Of losing those that I dearly love
Ruthlessly, in the blink of an eye,
Of being surrounded by an ocean of people,
But still feeling alone and I can't explain why.

Because losing you was far from easy
For you left an indelible mark on me
My most prized memories have you in them
But now I yearn to be free-

From our hauntingly long past
That has taken over the thoughts in my mind
I've tried looking for peace amidst the chaos
But I can't chase what I'm not meant to find.

So I choose to keep those pictures away
I only save them for old times' sake
But I know that even one look at them
Will indubitably cause my heart to break.

Because a picture is worth a thousand words
Well, I don't know if that's entirely true
But I do know that if those pictures talk
I'll never get over you.

OKAY SO.

Treat this part as an FAQ page.

Is this poem about love?
Yes!

Is this poem about romantic love?
While writing it I had platonic 'best friend-love' in mind, but it could be whatever you want it to be:)

Is this based on real-life experience?
A little on real life but a LOT more on movies and books :p

How is the loss of the persona in the poem defined?
I wrote this poem thinking about losing someone to death, but then again it could be whatever you want it to be.

Movies about losing people but finding strength despite the loss:

- Jessica Darling's It List (I watched it as a kid and only when I watched it did I realize how the thought of losing a best friend was so unsettling)
- Wonder (classic movie, recommended for all ages, Liv's story is inspiring)
- Bride Wars (super cute movie)
- The Edge of Seventeen (all about loss in different forms, kinda heavy but I liked it)
- The Manifest (amazon prime show, explores loss in various forms, 10/10)

See you next week:)
